Over my break i was reading alot and happened to stumble upon a book called The Way to Rainy Mountain. Way To Rainy Mountain is a novel that teaches one how to find themselves and discover who you really are and where your roots were built it is very ted into the theme who am I . Mommaday is part cherokoe and half Kiowa and this is the half which he wishes to discover so his journey takes happens in three parts where he looks at his tribe and recalls what he remembers when he was small and what remembers of his grand motherthen in the next part is the setting out wherehe goes to plaseces of the koiwa where he learns more of his people the the in the last part he reflects on what he has learned.
Scott N. Mommaday is a well renowned author and professor at the University of Arizona who has roots in the Kiowa tribe that reside on rainy mountain which is located in Oklahoma. Mommaday s on a mission to discover who he is and to learn about what it means to be a Kiowa. In the Beginning Mommady does not even know his peoples language nor where the kiowa originated from he visits his grandmother‘s house
which has become lonely because she has passed away. He recalls the Kiowa being festive while she was alive and the house always being filled up with loud noise but know had an eerie silence. He also remembers at his grandmothers that the koiwa had great respect for their elders because it was the elders who taught the traditions on to the next generation. He next visits a few more important kiowa places which prepares him for the next part of his mission the setting off. The setting off is where he goes into the tribe to learn of this once great nation. he goes to learn about myth history and past kiowa individual experiences. Throughout the story Mommaday learns of many myths such as myths about gods, buffalo with steel horns and a grandmother spider all which in their own way tell about the kiowa way of life. For instance there was a myth about a woman who was left in a cradle on a tree which grew till she got to the sky she later married the sun god and they had a child she tries to leave one day but is killed by the sun gods disk. This story shows the rank of woman in the Kiowa tribe and that they were obey their husbands it also has a little symbolism to adam and eve because they like this woman disobeyed their god and were punished. At this time we star to realize that Mammaday has started to pick up on the language he then recalls one f the kiowas most sacred tradition the sun dance a dance repeated by most natives In the area in the end he learns that traiton was sacre t his people and who he was as a kiowa. In conclusion
Monnamday has learned what it means to be a kiowa and what his tradition is all about he has gone through a big change in his life and answered the question he was looking for which is who he was as a kiowa.
